March 2020 : Letter from Principal Cosentino

Dear St. Peter’s Family,

There’s never a dull moment at the home of the Eagles!

Our second semester is going great AND midterm and regents exams are over! The young men with the highest grades are anxiously waiting for March 24th. Students who’ve achieved 1st and 2nd honors will head to Honors night at the Hilton Garden Inn to receive certificates and awards for their academic achievement.

We’re living out our Lasallian principles by helping our own community and those abroad. 15 students and 10 faculty members fed and clothed the homeless in our area with “Project Hospitality”. We also are continuing our first Friday of the month food drives, supplying the Staten Island food pantries. Right now through our Lenten drives, we are collecting money for Lasallian School students in Venezuela, so pitch in!

Our athletic teams are excelling on the court, field and beyond! The St. Peter’s basketball winning tradition is at an all-time high. Four straight Island Championships and six championships in the past seven years! Coach Charlie Driscoll surpassed Legendary Coach Jack Mcginley as the all-time wins leader in school history with 334 wins. Columbia-bound senior Captain Liam Murphy finished his career with 1,017pts. During the season, we honored all of our past Jacques Award winners with a halftime ceremony revealing our Jacques Banner. The freshman basketball team, led by Coach Denis Driscoll, won the Freshman Island championship with freshman Alex Chi being named as the Tournament MVP. Congrats to all!

Now to the pool. Under new swimming coaches Derek Villa ‘13 and Kevin Baroz ‘13, we placed 12th in the City Championships and the 400m freestyle relay! Dave Poggoili came in 5th in the 100 meters freestyle and qualified for the State Championship.

In track, Johnny Sokoll improved his run time to one of the best two miles in the CHSAA. Wagner bound senior Mike Politti and Junior Ryan Sinclair qualified for the state meet in the 300m and 600m. And a new school record in the 4×400 relay set with a time of 3:25.4!

Trinity College-bound senior football player Anthony Casillo has received numerous Island and city-wide honors. He was selected to the Golden Eleven as one of the top student-athletes in the CHSFL and the Boomer Esiason all-star game for the top players in NYC and Long Island! Anthony was also named CHSFL Lineman of the year and was nominated for the Fred Fugazzi Award, Sal Somma Award and the Denis Barret Award.

And, finally for some huge news in hockey- our head coach Ed Blackburn is being inducted into the CHSAA Hall Of Fame!

Seniors went above and beyond with their Capstone projects this year. In the projects, students plan, complete and present a self-directed project which reflects acquired knowledge and skill, personal interest, talent or a possible career path. Projects are presented using multiple methods: written, oral presentation, technology and exhibits or artistic presentation. We saw a wide variety of topics from oncology, sports medicine, bullying and much more. Here’s a look at our gold medal winners:
– Chris Catalano – “Lego Empire”
– Aidan Cobovic – “Video Game Industry”
– Kyle Fies – “Zoological Diseases”
– Hunter Peter – “Phobias”
– Ryan Heming – “Opiod Epidemic”

We have continued our “Engineering Tomorrow” field trips to the Con Edison headquarters in Long Island City. We also honored 12 students for our “Soaring Eagles” program, acknowledging exemplary efforts in the classroom. Our new zoology program is a huge success with over 20 exhibits in the Biology Lab. In this program, our young men are learning about ecosystems and the living environment with a wide variety of reptiles.

Are you ready for a great performance? The Drama Program is gearing up for “The Wiz”. Performances are May 15 – 17. Our band is also hard at work, practicing for their spring concert.

As we continue to strive for excellence in all we do with hard work and dedication, we always keep Jesus in our hearts as the unseen teacher and guide each step of the way as our founder de Lasalle taught us.

God Bless!
