Charles Driscoll
The history and tradition of St. Peter’s basketball is a storied one, and not a mantle to take up lightly. When Charlie was hired as the JV basketball coach following one year at Moore Catholic High School, he only had one goal: to continue the tradition of success. Following his retirement as the head varsity basketball coach in 2022, it’s safe to say that Charlie did just that and more.
Basketball runs deep in Charlie’s family. Charlie’s father was a basketball player at St. Peter’s and Charlie both played and coached basketball in his youth. Over 12 years as the JV head coach, Charlie finished with a 201-75 record, and finished his varsity coaching career with a record of 344-178. If the wins weren’t indicative enough of Charlie’s success, Charlie led St. Peter’s to 10 Staten Island High School League Championships, 14 CHSSA division titles, advanced to the Final Four of he CHSSA-AA division (widely considered the best basketball league in the state of New York), coached eight Jacques Award winners, seven Zabrowski Award winners, saw two of his players become varsity club winners (best student athletes in Staten Island), and witnessed 80 of his players continue their careers at the college level, six in Division I and 10 in Division II.
This honor as a Hall of Fame inductee is extra special for Charlie, as not only is he the first coach to be inducted, but Charlie knows how important St. Peter’s was to his father and knows his father would be so proud of Charlie’s induction. Charlie is grateful to the support he’s received over the years from St. Peter’s, particularly Rich LaGrotta, the athletic director who hired him to the JV team, and John Fodera who promoted Charlie to varsity head coach.
Charlie is thankful to the students, parents, alumni and fans who supported him and his teams all though the years, and is especially thankful for the support of his wife and high school sweetheart Kathy, two children Michael ‘04 and Alexandra and three grandchildren.
