Harry P. Doherty

Boasting a career ranging from the United States Marine Corps to CEO of Staten Island Bank and Trust, Harry P. Doherty lived life fully and without regret. Born and raised in New Dorp to Irish immigrants, Doherty credited his Catholic education, attending Our Lady Queen of Peace and St. Peter’s Boys High School, and the struggles his parents went through raising himself and his four siblings, with his lifelong success, saying the lessons he learned from his family and in the classroom guided him to and through his service in the Marines and his college education at PACE.

After graduation, Doherty would spend his professional career at SI Bank and Trust. Rising through the ranks from management trainee to CEO, Doherty’s colleagues remember him as gregarious, business-savvy and always ready with a light-hearted “Gotcha” joke whether it was directed at himself or someone else. Doherty was passionate about his community, contributing to charitable events for over 25 years

Despite his many professional accomplishments, Doherty’s true passions were for his wife Roberta, children Brian, Christopher and Erin, grandchildren, the game of golf and serving the community. Doherty would contribute to the Catholic Communal Fund and Jewish Communal Fund, drove the annual SI March of Dimes Golf Outing for 25 years, was actively involved in JCC Manor Road (with long-time friend and golfing buddy Alan Bernikow), played critical roles in the St. Clare soccer program and Staten Island Soccer Referee Association and created the SI Foundation, which worked to improve quality of life on Staten Island with particular focus on the least-advantaged.

Doherty’s surviving children and grandchildren remember their father and grandfather as a charismatic, fun-loving family man who was always up for a good time. If Doherty could speak to the current and future students, faculty and staff at St. Peter’s, he’d expressed his pride in how the St. Peter’s community appreciates and continues to contribute to their local community, and would encourage the next generation of students to use the education, morals and connections provided by St. Peter’s to support their local communities.
